Detours and roadworks 2026

Nelson City and Tasman District Councils have multiple projects across the region. Some of these resurfacing projects may have minor impacts on bus stops and routes and require a bus detour, or bus stop closure. Alongside these projects, there are often events that also require a detour.

Collingwood Street at Fresh Choice

Due to work on Bridge Street near the intersection of Collingwood Street, the R1 and R4 bus stop outside Fresh Choice will be temporarily relocated outside The Free House (95 Collingwood Street).

Salisbury Road rebuild to start

Richmond’s Salisbury Road, from the Champion Road roundabout to Arbor-Lea Avenue, is in for a much-needed rebuild from 7 April.

The job involves repairing structurally failed sections of the road, reconstructing the road base where required, and replacing the surface with new asphalt.

Salisbury Road is a key transport route for Tasman, and structural repairs are required, not just surface maintenance. Getting this work done now will improve safety for all road users, extend the life of the road, and reduce the need for ongoing reactive repairs.

Work is being done in two stages, beginning on Tuesday 7 April and will take two weeks.

There will be traffic changes over the project period, including temporary lane changes and a short one‑way detour at different times.

Traffic flow will remain consistent, and access to homes and businesses will be maintained wherever possible, although there may be some delays and short‑term access restrictions as different stages of work are carried out.

Route 2 eBus services along Salisbury Road will also be affected. The bus stop on Salisbury Road outside Woolworths will be closed and shifted to the stop outside Waimea College for Richmond-bound buses.

Nelson-bound buses on Route 2 will use the first stop on Salisbury Road and then detour down Talbot Street and the Richmond Deviation to rejoin their regular route picking up passengers on Main Road Stoke – the other three Salisbury Road Nelson-bound bus stops will be out of action while this work is taking place.

We’re doing this work during school holidays to minimise any disruptions.
